BCC BriefsSupervisor of Elections – heard a presentation by the supervisor on purchasing modems that will provide off-site ballot tabulation for faster election results; discussed forming a central canvassing board for post-municipal election audits; and approved the supervisor’s precinct boundary changes. School Speed Zones – authorized the installation of school speed zones at Seminole Ridge and West Boca high schools and directed staff to conduct engineering studies on a case-by-case basis if speed zones are requested by other high schools on county-owned roads. Transportation Oriented Development – met with West Palm Beach city officials on plans for the transportation-oriented development (TOD) zone near the West Palm Beach Tri-Rail station. Wage Theft – approved on preliminary reading and advertised for public hearing on June 21 establishment of an ordinance that would allow county officials to investigate employers who cheat their workers out of wages they are legitimately owed. Small Business Assistance – approved a contract with the Small Business Development Center at Palm Beach State College in the amount of $94,000 to provide technical assistance and training to small business enterprise firms in the county. Ambulance Service – adopted a resolution granting a three-year extension of existing emergency medical services for Medics Ambulance Service and Atlantic/Palm Beach Ambulance doing business as American Medical Response. Weapons – directed staff to draft a resolution urging state lawmakers to enact a ban on large-capacity ammunition-feeding devices. Energy Audit – directed staff to work with FPL on an energy audit of some county buildings and provide suggestions to reduce energy usage.
